Little People

I moved to DC in July of 2007 and when October of that year rolled around, I was SO excited for Halloween. Since the end of middle school, my participation on Halloween had been minimal because I was too old to go trick or treating, but finally I was a grown up and could contribute to this quaint societal tradition by passing candy out. So on Halloween day I went to the store on my lunch break and bought a bunch of individually wrapped twizzlers and mini crunch bars, hurried home after work, turned on my porch light, and waited for the little ghouls to arrive. I sat there for probably two hours and no one came. I decided to walk around and see where all the kids might be – there were no kids out on the streets at all. That year I ended up reverse trick or treating and taking all that candy to my friends who live in my complex. Halloween 2008 I didn’t even try, but I did look for kids as I was commuting home – again, nothing.

The thing about DC is that most people are either single or married, but without kids. There are so many young professionals in the area, and I guess as soon as people have kids, they move further out. It is the strangest thing – when a kid rides the metro, they captivate the entire train car. I like to watch the people in the metro and how they react. Usually, all the women just smile and wave and try to get the kids to reciprocate. The men usually say hi and try to ask the kids questions or make them laugh. Male or female, no one can resist these little people. It is clear that everyone seems to like kids, and that kids bring joy to everyone around them, but yet, no one seems to have them.

I have been very lucky – for the past year I have been babysitting two kids every other weekend. It has been such a blessing and has enriched my life so much! On the one hand it helps me to appreciate the stage of life that I am in, because after chasing them around all weekend, I can go home and relax and do whatever I want. On the other hand, it helps me not to forget what life is really all about – family and selfless sacrifice. I guess it’s the whole out of sight, out of mind phenomenon, but not having families around me makes me forget how great they are. This babysitting gig has just helped me to maintain that lifeline to reality.

Season Anticipator

I realize that we still have another month of summer left, but I just couldn’t wait any longer – I had to change my blog background. As I have mentioned, I am a season anticipator and fall, being my favorite season, is anticipated from the time it ends until it starts the next year. This year I really wanted to try to enjoy the here and now, live in the moment, if you will. Spring was pretty easy, especially living in DC and having all the beautiful flowers and cherry blossoms to distract me. Summer was a little harder, and I tried, but this weekend was SO humid (the windows on our house literally steamed up and I couldn’t even see outside) that I just gave in and am now happily anticipating autumn. When you live in a place like this, how could you not?

Second Annual Legendary Adventure

I am finally free to enjoy my summer!! I finished my class - Intro to International Law - on the 23rd and I have my summer back! First order of business: a legendary adventure with Kami, Diana, and Wayne. Last summer we went to the Delaware state fair and Rehoboth Beach. This year we went to Nashville... somehow our adventures always include us getting our "country" on. Main goal of the trip - see Carrie Underwood sing at the Grand Ole Opry. Well, mission accomplished, and SO much more!

We started off early Friday morning (but still not as early as planned since I slept through my alarm) and had a nice 10 hour drive. It wasn't too bad - we pretty much sang the entire time, which is just my style! Once we got to Nashville we checked into our Ramada hotel and took a dip in their "world famous" guitar shaped pool. (Let me just say here that we felt deceived... the pool was shaped like a guitar, but I found myself just wanting to get out of the pool as quickly as possible once I was in... gross) Then we headed over the pedestrian bridge to downtown Nashville and strolled around the Broadway. We had AMAZING BBQ at Jack's - I had the Texas Brisket, of course, and then we headed over to the Wild Horse Saloon for some line dancing. It was really fun and Kami was a good time... I mean had a good time! She totally dominated. The best I did was get hit on by a plastered old guy at the bar while I was trying to get some bottled water. I'm not too upset about my failure. :)

Saturday we headed over to the Grand Ole Opry and got a back stage tour. It was awesome! We stood on the stage in the circle that was taken from the original stage at the Ryman Auditorium... all the greats sang on that stage... we just stood there, but it was still cool! Wayne was quite pleased to see Carrie's mailbox, as well as the dressing room she would be using! Next we headed to a flea market, where we asked some locals for a good place to get some home cookin'. They suggested the Sylvan Park Restaurant, which we were able to find thanks to my trusty BBerry. When we got there all we could say was "wow" or "this place looks sketchy", but we were on an adventure, so we went in. SO worth it! This place was awesome and the staff was highly entertaining!! Try the pecan pie if you're ever in town!

After a quick nap at our luxury (cough, cough) hotel, we headed back to the Grand Ole Opry, and after a quick stop at the nearby mall, we headed over to see the show. We thought we had 3rd row seats and were pretty excited. Turns out we had SECOND ROW seats!! See that picture below, yeah, right where the benches come together, that's where we were sitting. Note the edge of the stage in the bottom left corner of the picture. Yeah, we were THAT CLOSE. AMAZING!! The show was awesome and Carrie was flawless (I hate her)!! I loved getting to hear such a wide range of country music. Being there and getting to see all these "old guys" who are really legends and seeing Carrie so up close made me feel like a country music insider! Also, I learned an important lesson at the show - if you can't make money, make out with somebody. You can take that one to the bank, folks!

Please note in the following video that Carrie waves right at Wayne. As soon as she breaks up with her boyfriend, they are going to get married.

This was an awesome, no, legendary trip (what else did I expect?) and I am so glad that I was able to go. Along with the tradition of having a legendary adventure is the tradition of me joining in at the last minute, and I never will regret it!! P.S. Why does the ride home always seem SO MUCH longer than the ride there?

Independence Day

For those of you who like to visit DC vicariously through me, here are some videos of the festivities on the mall. This year I was with some friends on the tidal basin at the Jefferson Memorial. We were actually down wind from where they were setting off the fireworks, and we got sprinkled with a fine dust of firework ashes! It was kind of gross, actually.

I love these golden ones:

My favorite are the multi-colored spiral-y ones!

Here is the finale - I like how my camera was going crazy trying to adjust to the light!

Not Quite Cracker Jacks...

So today I got a prize in my lunch! Unfortunately it was not something I wanted. There was a piece of metal in my Indian food from Trader Joe's!! I am pretty much devastated because I love their Indian food. I don't think I'll ever be able to eat frozen dinners again! I guess on the bright side it wasn't an insect or an animal... I have a great story to tell you about Taco Cabana if you ever want to hear it... haven't eaten there since then!

My Hood

Some of my DC friends have been posting this video and I thought you might enjoy seeing what a tough town I live in.

You have to copy and paste the link... I couldn't embed it.
